The rain over the last two weeks may have forced us to go to Plan B, but the sun was a welcome guest at this year's Duck Derby! Over 3,600 rubber duckies participated in Service 1st Federal Credit Union’s 7th Annual Charity Duck Derby Saturday, August 4, raising over $16,000. Service 1st held a random drawing during the event to select the winners. Rainy weather throughout the summer resulted in increased river levels and a strong current, which the Duck Derby Committee felt were unsafe conditions for their dedicated team of volunteers. In order to ensure their safety, the credit union hosted festivities in the lot near Zamboni Park on West Front Street in Danville.
“We appreciate the support we receive from the community for this event,” said Michael Thomas, Chief Financial Officer, Service 1st and Duck Derby Committee Chair. “We were really hoping to be back in the water for the Derby this year; however, Mother Nature had different plans. We want to thank everyone for joining us today. Whether we are on the River or not, seeing the families at the event and knowing we are making a difference for these charities is what it is all about.”
Funds raised by the Duck Derby will be combined with funds raised by the Service 1st 25th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, being held Friday, August 24, 2018 at the Frosty Valley Country Club in Danville, to benefit the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, ThinkBIG Pediatric Cancer Fund, and Geisinger’s Autism and Developmental Medicine Institute.
Leading up to the event, individuals could purchase tickets for either a single duck or a flock of ducks. Service 1st congratulates the ticket holders whose numbers matched those of the ducks randomly selected during Saturday’s event.
Derby winners include: First Place ($500) #245 Gail Keppler; Second Place ($100) #174 B. Price; Third Place ($100) #496 Richard Carr; Fourth Place ($100) #2814 Meghann Hawley; and Fifth Place ($100) #2714 Tim Sones. Service 1st also randomly selected a special last place prize winner. The winner, #3541 Adrian Miller, will receive a special stuffed animal duck and a $25 Service 1st Visa® Gift Card.
Sponsors for this year’s event included: Bear Rental, Dollar Associates, LLC; Fast Signs, Wilkes-Barre; Smart Partner, GK Visual, Kornerstone Custom Builders, Members 1st Federal Credit Union, Rita’s Ice, Danville; and Rock God Brewing Company.
